Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that can make tools. But capability is not destiny. Its value and its danger emerge only when it enters real systems: energy, software, capital, organizations, machines, biology, and political institutions.
Douglas Adams’ Total Perspective Vortex was the ultimate torture device because it forced someone to grasp their true insignificance within the universe’s infinite scale. Applied today, perhaps we are overstating the significance of our inventions, our importance, and the impact they will have on humankind. Artificial intelligence, space travel, and self-driving cars are interesting engineering developments, and indeed, some will have a significant impact on modern society. But it’s reasonable to confront the scope of these changes and be humble regarding our actual impact without overstating its importance. In other words, get a perspective.
The Vortex is a form of torture because the truth of one’s insignificance was unbearable. Perhaps that truth is found in the disruptive innovations we fear, the humanity that may be lost in this sea of technological innovation, or our own fear of irrelevance. We have a deeper responsibility with these expanding powers. It’s happened before; perhaps humankind can make better use of this new era of disruptive innovation and our expanding powers. What converts technological capability into durable human and economic value? The chapters that follow move from history and intelligence to deployment, markets, geopolitics, and responsibility. The answer is never the model alone. It is the system around it—and the judgment behind the system.
This book was written to provide perspective at a moment when perspective is increasingly difficult to maintain. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies are advancing rapidly. The claims surrounding them are advancing even faster. Breakthroughs are presented as revolutions. Demonstrations are mistaken for deployable products. Technological capability is confused with economic value, and speculation about the future often overwhelms the realities of energy, infrastructure, capital, institutions, and human behavior.
The purpose of The Total Perspective Vortex is to separate what is possible from what is probable and what is impressive from what is consequential. This is not an argument against technological optimism. Artificial intelligence is an extraordinary tool: a tool capable of making other tools. It will expand human capability, create industries, reorganize institutions, and generate opportunities we cannot yet fully imagine. But technology does not operate independently of the world around it. Its consequences are determined by the systems into which it is introduced.
A model is not a business. AI is not understanding. A prototype is not deployment. Innovation is not adoption. And capability is not destiny. This book therefore examines AI as part of a much larger industrial, economic, and human system.
